Police say a suicide attacker has detonated a car bomb near the gates of the main NATO base in southern Afghanistan, killing a civilian and wounding eight other people. The attack outside Kandahar Airfield early Monday came as thousands of U.S. Marines in a neighboring province mounted a major offensive against the Taliban. Border police commander Gen. Saifullah Hakim says the bomber blew himself up with the car bomb outside the gates of the base on the outskirts of Kandahar, the main city in southern Afghanistan. Those wounded included four civilians and four Afghan soldiers.
