LAHORE Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said construction of 22 model villages in the flood-hit areas of the province will be started from March 15, and these villages will be completed and handed over to the flood affectees within 90 days. The model villages equipped with necessary facilities will introduce a new culture in these areas. Completion of construction work within timeframe is the responsibility of contractors, while administration will ensure availability of construction material, he stated, while presiding over a high-level meeting regarding construction of model villages in flood-hit areas at CMs Secretariat here on Saturday. Provincial Minister for Agriculture Malik Ahmad Ali Aulakh, MNAs, MPAs, Secretaries Communication and Works, Housing and Local Government departments, Commissioners and District Coordination Officers of the divisions concerned as well as contractors were present on the occasion. The CM added that rehabilitation of flood affectees was the responsibility of the government which had to be fulfilled. He said rehabilitation of the flood affectees was a challenge and the officers showing good performance in this regard would be encouraged. He said model villages were being constructed with the donations of the people since it was a public welfare project. Contractors should show a sense of national responsibility and take minimum profit so that maximum facilities can be provided to the calamity-stricken people, he said, adding that officers showing better performance regarding construction of model villages and the contractors maintaining a high standard of construction work and timely completion of model villages would be encouraged. He also told the meeting that a committee comprising elected representatives would be set up to supervise the construction process, and administration should make immediate arrangements for the purchase of land for model villages, if required. He made it clear that no compromise would be made on the quality of construction work. He further directed that setting up of vocational training centre, school, dispensary and provision of necessary facilities in model villages should also be ensured within 90 days. Earlier, Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority Khalid Sherdil, while giving a detailed briefing regarding the model villages project, informed that 22 model villages were being constructed in flood-hit areas. He said five model villages would be constructed in Muzaffargarh, three in Dera Ghazi Khan, three in Rahimyar Khan, three in Mianwali, one in Bhakkar, three in Layyah and four in Rajanpur.
