In 1992, major changes were made in World Cup format. Most prominent was the introduction of the coloured kits. Australia and New Zealand were host nations. In the beginning Pakistan had only one victory in first five matches, but after that cornered tigers under the leadership of Imran Khan surprised the entire world and won the final against England in Melbourne. In 1996, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka were the hosts and Sri Lanka with great style won the mega event. England for the fourth time hosted the World Cup in 1999 and Pakistan reached the finals and was tagged as favourites by cricket pundits but it was Australia which after playing one of the best matches in cricket history (famous semi final against South Africa) entered the final and won it easily against green shirts. Coming on to the World Cup 2011, in my opinion, the excitement and emotions will be hundred times more from the Quarter final stage. And as expected Pakistan, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand will qualify for next from Group A whereas India, England, South Africa and West Indies will qualify from Group B. West Indies for second stage will mostly depend on Chris Gayle to fire. New Zealands chances are also bleak. South Africa has a history of losing in big games in World Cup which may still haunt the African side. Sri Lankan teams chances are also bright as their spinners and Malinga are the key. Englands confidence is high after the tie against India and also their batting has clicked which is a good sign. Australian bowling attack has the power and pace to bowl out opposition side as their three fast bowlers namely Bret Lee, Shaun Tait and Mitchel Johansan bowls at a pace of about 140 km/h but World Cup champion is short of spinners which can affect its position in knock out stage. For India, it is the best chance to win the World Cup but in knock out stage whether it will be in quarters or semis if Indian side will play in India (as quarter finals and one semi final is not in India) the home crowd pressure may sink India. For 1992 world champions, their team is united under Shahid Afridi who is leading the team by example. Younus Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shoaib Akhtar have come in form at the right time. The only thing worrying is the fielding which may cause problems in crucial matches. But if fielding is improved as well as our batting than there is every possibility that Afridi mens will return with the most prestigious trophy. MUBASHIR MAHMOOD, Karachi, March 5.
