ISLAMABAD - The NA Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges on Tuesday summoned BOL TV’s CEO and anchor Amir Liaquat Hussain in its next meeting for levelling allegations against parliamentarian and JUI-F chief Fazal Rehman.

The committee also directed the PEMRA to check persistent violation of media code of conduct and initiate necessary action against TV channels and anchors found guilty of casting false allegations against public-office holders and elected representatives.

Rehman had moved a “question of privilege” that Amir Liaqat, the host of “Aisa Nahin Chaley Ga” on BOL TV on November 21, levelled baseless allegations against him.

The committee under the chair of MNA Junaid Anwar Chaudhary observed that no one should be allowed to cast false allegations on anyone without evidence. It further said that the PEMRA should assert its regulatory authority to check such violations. The PEMRA chairman apprised the committee of the action initiated against the TV channel and the anchor on a complaint lodged by the mover of the “question of privilege”.

While discussing another question of privilege raised by MNA Abdul Qayyum Nahra against assistant director (land), Nowshera Virkan district in Gujranwala, the committee decided to summon the Punjab chief secretary, a senior member of the Board of Revenue Punjab and a project director, and others for further discussion on the issue.

Deferring discussion on the questions of privilege moved by MNAs Mian Imtiaz Ahmed and Rana Muhammad Afzal Khan till the next meeting, the committee disposed of amendments to Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007, moved by MNAs Sheikh Salahuddin and Muhammad Muzamil Qureshi.
