LAHORE - The PML-Q leadership has deferred Moonis Elahis return to the country in view of his likely arrest for his alleged involvement in the NICL scam, The Nation has learnt. However, the party insists that it isnt seeking a deal for the safe return of Moonis. Sources in the PML-Q on Sunday told The Nation that the partys brass would chalk out a new strategy for the safe comeback of the son of former Punjab CM Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi. They party wants to forestall the new action taken by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), sources added. Certain quarters believe that the FIA is seeking red warrant for Moonis to arrest him abroad. The detention of Moonis will not only cause embarrassment to the party, but also carry serious implications for the political future of the party already at odds with its dissident MPAs, known as the forward bloc and the likeminded, in the Punjab Assembly. When contacted, Senator Kamil Ali Agha, Central Secretary Information PML-Q confirmed that there will be a strategy shift for Moonis return. We have decided to defer the return of Moonis indefinitely, while a new strategy will be chalked out keeping in view the stance of the FIA, he added. He said that despite a statement by Mohsin Warraich, an accused in the NICL scam, that Moonis Elahi had nothing to do with the case, the FIA is bending over backwards to unfairly implicate Moonis in the scam. Senator Kamil said that the partys leadership had earlier planned the return of Moonis within a week of summons by the FIA, but the federal agencys haste indicated that it wanted to malign the PML-Q leaders to damage the party politically. In such situation, it would not be wise to present Moonis to them without measures to counter the conspiracies, he added. Meanwhile, informed circles in the federal capital claimed that senior leaders of the PML-Q were making efforts to use their contacts with the powers-that-be to avert the arrest of Moonis abroad in case the FIA gets his red warrants. The PML-Q leaders also have the option of pre-arrest bail for Moonis for his safe return, sources added. However, the PML-Q leadership has been unable to secure the guarantee that Moonis would not be arrested on return. Senator Kamil, on this point, insisted that the PML-Q did not believe in back-channel deals and would foil all conspiracies against the party and its leadership without striking a deal.
