PESHAWAR - Veteran politician and former Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Qazi Hussain Ahmad was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard in Ziarat Kaka Sahib in Nowshera district amid moving scenes on Sunday.Thousands of people from different walks of life, JI activists, party office bearers and politicians belonging to different political parties attended the funeral.Suffering from heart disease and asthma, Qazi Hussain was shifted to Islamabad from Peshawar for treatment a couple of days back, where he died at around 1am on Sunday at the aged of 74.His body was moved to Peshawar for funeral. Draped in JI flag, the coffin of Qazi was brought from his house in Peshawar to Motorway Ring Road Chowk, where JI Chief Syed Munawar Hassan led his funeral prayers. Later, his body was taken to Ziarat Kaka Sahib for burial.Prominent among those who attended the funeral prayers were PTI Central President Javed Hashmi, PML-N leaders Ameer Muqam and Sabir Shah, ANP’s Ghulam Ahmad Bilour and Haroon Bilour, JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman, JUI-S chief Maulana Samiul Haq, QWP Chairman Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, PkMAP Chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai, former DG ISI Hameed Gul, chief of Hizbul Mujahidin Syed Salahudin, ex-prime minister Azad Kashmir Sardar Atiq Ahmad, Allama Sajid Naqvi, Sirajul Haq, Liaqat Baloch, Prof Khurshed Ahmad and Hafiz Hussain Ahmad.Leaders of religious and political parties, minorities and other segments of the society expressed sorrow and grief on the sad demise of Jamaat-i-Islami former ameer Qazi Hussain Ahmed. President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, MQM chief Altaf Hussain, KPK Governor Barrister Masood Kausar, Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti, Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif, Fareed Paracha and others expressed heartfelt grief over the sad demise of Qazi Hussain Ahmed.In their condolence messages‚ they termed his demise as a great loss on religious and political spectrum of the country. They lauded his services as a prolific religious scholar and a veteran politician who served his party with strong devotion‚ dedication and commitment leading it for over two decades. They prayed Allah Almighty to rest his soul in eternal peace and give courage to the bereaved family.Staff reporter adds from Lahore: Ameer Jamaat-ud-Dawa Hafiz Saeed, Professor Sajid Meer, Ibtisam Elahi Zaheer, Ehsan Wyne, Qari Zawar Bahadar, PTI, PPP, PML-N leaders and others said that Qazi Hussain, throughout his life, worked for the religious harmony and peace. He was a solid voice against the sectarianism and violence, said leaders. Bishop Alexander John Malik expressed sorrow and grief on the demise of Qazi Hussain Ahemd. He said that late Qazi was a good friend and prayed that may his soul rest in peace.Qazi was raised to the office of Secretary General in 1978. In 1987, he was elected as JI ameer and continued to serve in that capacity, getting re-elected four more times (1992, 1997, 2002 and 2007). He was elected as senator in 1985 but on his re-election in 1992, he resigned from the seat agitating on government policies. In 2002 elections, he was elected as MNA on two seats. In 2008, he excused to be elected once more and the members of his party elected Syed Munawwar Hassan as the new JI ameer.
