PESHAWAR – A PPP lawmaker in Khyber Pk Assembly, Dr Faiza Rasheed, resigned from the legislature on Tuesday in protest against the government’s failure to take action against a gynaecologist in District Haripur and not allowing her to discuss the issue on floor of the house.

Dr Faiza submitted her resignation to Speaker Kiramatullah Khan after the conclusion of the proceedings. Talking to reporters, she said she wanted to raise a very important public issue, but unfortunately, the speaker did not allow her. And that’s why she resigned from her seat.

Faiza said she resigned as no action was taken against Dr Amira Takreem, a gynaecologist at the Women and Children Hospital Haripur, over his insulting behaviour with patients. She alleged that Amira compelled poor patients for treatment at her private hospital instead of the government-run facility, where she was currently serving. Faiza added that owing to the negligence of the gynaecologist, some four women gave birth to children on road, while a mother and her child died in another case recently.

She said she had already raised the issue on the floor of the house and asked for probe into the matter, but the demand was ignored.

Hailing from District Haripur, Dr Faiza belongs to the PPP and was elected MPA on a reserved seat for women in February 2008 elections.

Replying to a question, she said Dr Amira and Medical Superintendent Mohammad Nawaz were protecting each others, adding that she did not want to remain a legislator in a house, where she could not even raise her voice on public issues.
