ISLAMABAD- Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, said on Friday that the Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan's statement implying that judge Rafaqat Ahmed Khan Awan has died as a result of accidental firing by his own bodyguard was irresponsible and unfortunate.

Speaking on the floor of the lower house on a point of order, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader said that the interior minister was calling terrorists patriots and protecting them. He added that such statements would drive the opposition to take on an offensive posture.

"We want democracy to sustain … but that should not be regarded as a weakness on our part," he said, adding that the opposition was being criticized as too friendly and not critical enough. Shah said he opposed the inclusion of military representatives in the new government committee. He said the military would be blamed if the government's talks with the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended in failure.

He said he was sending his proposals in writing for improving the National Internal Security Strategy. He also added that the opposition welcomes policies of the Prime Minister for restoration of peace and strengthening democracy.
