LAHORE - The capital city traffic police have planned to remove all encroachments and illegal bus stops located near congested points where worst traffic jam is observed most often. More than 1,468 wardens and 50 inspectors headed by 13 deputy superintendent of police (DSPs) have been deputed at all the recreational places to maintain smooth flow of traffic during the Eid days. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Cap (r) SSP Syed Ahmad Mobin expressed these views during an exclusive interview with TheNation on Saturday. He said a good number of wardens had been deployed at all the shopping malls, trading points, Sunday bazaars and other such markets to ensure safety of the commuters and vehicles. Traffic police is the only force across the entire world which have taken an exemplary step of paying 'first salam pher kalam, while stopping the commuters for security concerns he added. Ahmed Mobin revealed the Lahore traffic police in collaboration with the district police had ensured their active participation in collecting funds and food items from various parts of the City and dispatched five trucks to the flood-hit areas including Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur and other districts. One-wheeling is a curse, but no accident took place during the last three weeks at main points of the City as six DSPs, 18 Inspectors and 70 motorcyclists (wardens) have been discharging their duties on The Mall, Ferozpur Road, Jail Road, Main Boulevard, Gulberg Road, Model Town, Canal Road, Defense Road, Mughalpura Link Road, Garhi Shahu Road, Lorry Adda and especially Ring Road, he said while responding to a question. According to the CTO, the traffic police is the first force of Pakistan, which received warm welcome from the general public when it launched anti-polio campaign in collaboration with the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) a couple of months back. When asked about major punishments awarded to wardens in his tenure, the SSP said he suspended only one Inspector so far on charges of showing negligence while discharging his duties. In fact I have restored their (wardens) confidence. Regardless whether a person is traffic warden or civilian, when you give him honour he will perform well, the CTO remarked. He said there were minor chances of corruption in traffic police department due to an effective mechanism chalked out by the high-ups. However, he concluded, a strict departmental action would be initiated against the wardens involved in any kind of negligence or misuse of power.
