LAHORE PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif on Saturday urged the United States to play an active role for the promotion of peace and stability in South Asia He said since the US was a friend of both Pakistan and India, it was in a position to play the said role. The former prime minister said this while talking to US Ambassador Cameron Munter who called on him at Raiwind. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was also present. Nawaz said peace and stability in the region could only be ensured by facilitating resolution of the differences that have plagued the region for years. He said the United States should establish with Pakistan a relationship of mutual interest and mutual respect. Felicitating Munter, Nawaz said the two countries had cooperated closely on a number of critical issues, including some which had left a strong imprint on global developments. He said the two countries had, however, failed to build durable ties that could stand up to the challenges that emerged over the course of time. This was on account of their inability to build relations based on mutual trust and mutual respect. The PML-N chief recalled that he had warmly welcomed President Obamas references during his election campaign to the important role played by Pakistan in the region and beyond and to the need for the US to take an active interest in the promotion of peace and stability in the region. Nawaz also called upon the US to shift its focus away from the single item agenda that it had pursued over the years and to build more meaningful ties with Pakistan, based on identifying initiatives that could improve the lives and livelihood of the people of the country. To achieve this objective, he stressed that the Obama Administration should give greater priority to trade rather than to aid and to encourage investment in Pakistans critical sectors of the economy, including power, energy, agriculture and education. Online adds: Nawaz also made it clear that the Obama Administration will have to remove reservations of Pakistani people, adding that mistrust between Pakistan and US cannot be ended without stopping drone attacks. Senator Ishaq Dar and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Ch Nisar Ali Khan were also present during the meeting with the US envoy.
