KARACHI Former NHA chairman Major General Farrukh Javed and NHA General Manager (Construction) Mohammed Yousaf Barakzai escaped from the courtroom after the court dismissed their bail confirmation applications in Shershah Bridge collapse case. Three of the nine accused including NHA Chairman Chaudhry Altaf Hussain, former Member (Planning) Syed Najamul Hassan and Director Khaild Mirza have been arrested as their bail confirmation applications were rejected by Additional District and Sessions Judge (West) Gulshan Ara Chandio. However the Court confirmed the bail of former GM (Construction) Colonel (Retd) Tahseen-ul-Haq, Member (Operations) Raja Nowsherwan, Chairman of Ms Engineering Consultants International Limited Zaheer Mirza and Director Naveed Mirza. Following the court announcement on their applications, the police could only arrest two of the accused, while three escaped from the courtroom. According to the prosecution, as many as five people were killed, 14 others got injured and six vehicles damaged when a portion of Shershah Flyover collapsed on Sept 1, 2007. The Site police have registered a case against the accused. An FIR (181/2010) was registered under Sections 322 (punishment for qatl-bis-sabab), 431 (mischief by injury to public road, bridge, river or channel), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 337-H (punishment for hurt by rash or negligent act) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code. It must be mentioned here that the one kilometre portion of Shershah Bridge over the Karachi Northern Bypass collapsed only after 25 days of its inauguration on September 1, 2007, leaving five people dead including three women and causing injuries to 14 others, besides causing huge loss to national exchequer. Six vehicles were also damaged in the incident and a large number of people were trapped under the bridge.
