ISLAMABAD - Former federal minister for law and justice Babar Awan on Thursday said that the local bodies system across the country is the only way to end the sense of deprivation among minorities.

Talking to media persons at the Supreme Court premises, he said that not holding the local bodies system is the violation of the Constitution. He said that holding local bodies elections is not a political issue but the Constitution demands it.

The democratic system would not be completed without the local bodies system. “The representation of women, minorities, haris and labourers in the local governments is dispensable, and with the LB system the local issues could not be resolved,” he said.

The country where there is no government of locally elected representatives there the good governance is mere slogan, he maintained.

Babar Awan said that local bodies system is the only way to end the sense of deprivation among minority community in Pakistan, therefore local bodies elections should be held across the country and the minorities be given equal opportunity so that their issues could be redressed at the local level.

The former minister urged the provincial governments that instead of political sloganeering solid steps should be take for holding of local bodies election in their respective provinces.

He demanded that local governments elections should also be held in the federal capital and FATA, adding the Islamabad High Court should decide about the petition, in this regard, pending before it soon. He said that the tribal leaders have contacted him about holding of local bodies elections in the FATA.
