ISLAMABAD - United States Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Tom Malinowski concluded a two-day visit to Pakistan on Tuesday, during which he met senior Pakistani government officials and members of civil society.  According to the US Embassy, this was his first visit to Pakistan as Assistant Secretary of State.  

In meetings with senior government and military officials, he discussed matters of mutual interest, focusing on human rights and governance, and discussed opportunities for bilateral coordination to enhance accountability in governance and security institutions.  He expressed solidarity with the people of Pakistan in their struggle against terrorism. He stressed that rule of law is essential to get success in that struggle.  

In his meetings with civil society representatives, Assistant Secretary Malinowski discussed possible measures to improve safety for journalists and the capacity of the judiciary in combating terrorism.
