ISLAMABAD - Dr Fehmida Mirza has said that Pakistan attaches immense importance to its relations with France and wants to further diversify existing relations through enhancing parliamentary and economic ties. She appreciated French support for granting trade preferences to Pakistani exports in European Market. She was talking to Philippe Thiebaud, Ambassador of France who called on Speaker National Assembly in Parliament House, Tuesday afternoon. Dr. Fehmida Mirza said that France has always been supportive of Pakistan in catastrophes especially in the FoDP forum. She said that Government of Pakistan strongly desires a long-term strategic engagement with France for mutual benefit of both the countries. She stressed the need for enhancing support of friendly countries like France to meet the challenges inherited by the present democratic dispensation.She informed the Ambassador that the present diverse parliament consists of progressive and liberal forces who were proactively working for the betterment of masses. She also expressed the desire to enhance parliamentary ties between parliaments of both the countries.Philippe Thiebaud, the Ambassador said that France is cognizant of the geo-strategic importance of Pakistan and would continue extending its support to the present democratic government. He informed the Speaker that a five year Engagement plan has been chalked out and areas of possible cooperation would be identified for mutual benefit of the two countries. He agreed for enhancing parliamentary cooperation between the two parliaments of both the countries. Later, Lars Hjalmar Wide, Ambassador of Sweden called on Speaker National Assembly. While talking to the Swedish Ambassador, Dr. Fehmida Mirza said that enhanced interaction between parliaments of Pakistan and Sweden could play an important role in strengthening existing warm and cordial relations between two countries. She appreciated Swedish support for grant of Trade preferences to Pakistani exports in EU market. She also stressed for diversifying existing economic relations for mutual benefit of both the nations. She asked the Ambassador to take up the establishment of Pak-Sweden Friendship Group in Swedish Parliament with the Speaker of the Parliament.Lars Hjalmar Wide, Ambassador, agreed with the Speaker and said that parliamentarians being the true representatives of the people could play an important role in taking the existing bilateral relations between two countries to new heights. He said that Sweden would continue its support for strengthening of democracy and democratic institutions in Pakistan. He further apprised the Speaker about the measures inherited for enhancement of economic and trade ties between the two countries.
