FAISALABAD - The University of Agriculture, Faisalabad will establish farm market to provide outlets to the farmers for selling their products directly to the consumers.

The decision was made at a meeting of the UAF Endowment Fund’s Board of Directors on Tuesday. It was presided over by Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad at Syndicate Room.

The VC said that the initiative would improve the economic wellbeing of the farming community and strengthen economy. He said that the project was aimed at providing a model of a new channel in agro marketing to educate the farmers. The feasibility report of the project would be presented in the next meeting.

He also stressed the need for enhancing the outreach activities for educating the farmers in order to increase agricultural productivity of the country. The university was used to organize two festivals in a year in which Agri Exhibition, Kissan Convention, horse and cattle show and many colourful events were being presented for giving awareness to the farming community to make their practices compatible to the modern practices, he added.

Talking about dengue fever, he said that the university had initiated 12 research and outreach programmes to fight the epidemic that had taken the lives of many people in its last outbreak. He expressed the hope that the project would prove hallmark to fight the menace. He emphasised on stepped-up social mobilisation to curb the virus and save the lives of people. He also lauded the steps taken on the part of the Punjab government in this regard.

Talking about the other initiative, he said that the university had developed software to provide expert opinions to the farming community about the use of fertilizer. He said that under the project being, in collaboration with Agri Extension Dept, Punjab, the university had set up a call centre in the eight districts to provide the expert opinion.

Registrar Muhammad Hussain, Treasure Abdul Ghafoor Khan, Endowment Fund Executive Director Dr Tahir Zahoor, PARC ALP Executive Director Dr Shahida Jamil, Pakistan Farmer Association Chief Executive Aafaq Ahmad and Natiq Hussain, Chief Planning and Evaluation Cell Agri Dept Punjab also spoke on the occasion.
