Islamabad - Mother’s Day will be celebrated across the world including Pakistan today (Sunday).

The day, which is observed on second Sunday of May every year, was originated in North America in order to honour and respect mothers. It is celebrated to salute the motherhood and increase the maternal bonds to children, besides enhancing the influence of mothers in the society.

The events related to mothers and motherhood can be traced back to ancient Greeks and Romans.

, who held festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”

The day has been celebrated in Pakistan and the Sub-continent for the last few years. People send flowers, cakes, cards, mugs, sweets and other gifts to their mothers on the day.
