Islamabad - Speakers at a seminar organised in connection with World Thalassaemia Day here yesterday stressed upon the need for special attention towards thalassaemia patients to make them useful section of the society.

Pakistan Thalassaemia Welfare Society organised the seminar at Islamabad Club which was attended by over 80 children with thalassaemia and their parents. Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, a well-known scientist was the chief guest. President Pakistan Green Task Force Dr Jamal Nasir, Lt Gen (Retd) Kamal Akbar, Maj Gen (Retd) Masood Anwar, Maj Gen (Retd) Suhaib Ahmed Khan, Dr Abdul Qayum Awan, Prof Dr Tahira Zafar, and Murtaza Burhani were guests of honour on the occasion.

Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan said that collective efforts are required to overcome this fatal disease by creating awareness among masses to go under blood screening before marriages and promoting culture of donating blood. These thalassaemics need special attention of the society. He stressed on the need for promoting and encouraging these kids to make them useful part of the society.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Jamal Nasir appreciated the contribution made by Pakistan Thalassaemia Welfare Society for treatment of patients. He also stressed that it is need of the hour to make country free from the disease by creating awareness among general public about prevention. Countries like Greece, Cyprus and Italy overcame the disease by creating awareness and adopting precautionary measures. Now these are thalassaemia-free countries which were actually mother countries of this disease.

Lt Gen (Retd) Faheem Ahmad Khan, President Pakistan Thalassaemia Welfare Society also spoke on the occasion and counted for the efforts of the society in helping thalassaemics in getting treatment. He said that Thalassaemia House is working day and night. He requested that legislation should be passed for prevention of this disease.

Dr Abdul Qayyum Awan gave a brief lecture on prevention from the disease. Lt Gen (Retd) Kamal Akbar and Murtaza Burhani also addressed the audience and stressed on the need of importance of blood donation for the thalassaemics.

WHO Representative Dr Lamia Mahmoud, President PANAH Gen (Retd) Masood Kiani, Maj Gen (Retd) Hidayat Ullah Niazi, Lt Col (Retd) Muhammad Yousaf Mujahid, Dr Hassan Zaheer Abbas, Dr Rasheed Sial, Naeem Qureshi and a large number of people from different walks of life attended the seminar. Thalassaemics children presented different tableau and variety shows in the seminar.

At the end of the ceremony, the chief guest distributed shields among the doctors for their prominent performance.
