PESHAWAR Peshawar, Bannu and Abbottabad regions lifted winner trophies of badminton, volleyball and table tennis events respectively in the ongoing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Games played here at Qayyum Sports Complex. In team events, Abbottabad dominated in both men and women table tennis competitions, as in table tennis (women) it defeated Peshawar and obtained first position. Thus, Peshawar remained runner-up while Mardan got third position. Again, it was Abbottabad that won the table tennis (men) matches, Swat team remained the runner-up, while Kohat secured third position. In table tennis individual events (women) Farzana of Mardan defeated strong rival Sapna of Abbottabad and grabbed first position, while in individual (men) event,Both the provincial ministers also played an exhibition match of table tennis, which was greatly appreciated by the spectators. Aqil Shah presented an air ticket worth Rs 35,000 to Murad Ali, former national junior badminton champion to participate in the forthcoming Bahrain Open at Bahrain. He also awarded Rs 3,000 cash to the volleyball team of Bannu for showing best performance. The next round of event of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Games comprising netball (men and women) and wrestling will be played on November 9, 10.The basketball, squash, kabaddi and base ball (men and women) and softball (men and women) will be organised on November 11-13. The two events baseball and softball will be organised at Mardan. Ramiz, a youngster from Swat defeated Waqas of Dera Ismail Khan and got first position. In an exciting final match of volleyball, the formidable Bunnu team won the first two sets by 27-25 and 25-23. However, the team could not retain its dominance and was defeated by Peshawar team by 25-20, 25-20 in third and fourth sets. Thus, to decide, who will take off the trophy, the fifth and final set was equally poised and both the teams tried their best to secure points. However, it was Bannu team that overpowered Peshawar team through their powerful smashes and won the set by 15-13 and defeated the strong rival Peshawar by 3-2 sets and lifted the winner trophy. A good number of jubilant spectators enjoyed the excited encounter between the two teams. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Sports, Syed Aqil Shah was the chief guest. Cheered viewers fully remained involved in the match and applauded for both the teams. The badminton trophy went to Peshawar as it smashed Bannu in the final. Swat grabbed the third position. In badminton individual events, Murad Ali of Peshawar, the former national junior champion defeated Amin of Abbottabad. Later, at a colourful ceremony in sports venue, Qayyum Sports Complex, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar Hussain distributed trophies among the winner teams and players. Minister for Sports, Syed Aqil Shah, Secretary Information and President Table Tennis Association, Azmat Hanif Orakzai, Director Sports Mir Bashar and large number of players and officials were present on the occasion.
