LAHORE - The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) has declared Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) as a white elephant and responsible for destruction of medical education in the country. According to a press release issued on Sunday, PMA office-bearers including Dr M Sarwar, Prof Dr Yasmin Rashid, Dr Ashraf Nizami, Dr Akhtar Rashid Malik, Dr M Tanveer Anwar, Dr Ibrar Ashraf, Dr Shahid Malik, Dr Izhar Ch, Dr Salman Kazmi and others said the PMDC was responsible for mushrooming of private medical colleges in Pakistan by irrationally registering them just to earn money, which was causing a major damage to the standard of medical education in the country. They said the private medical colleges were opening fast but were not fulfilling even basic criteria of PMDC of medical facility, attached hospitals, bed to patient ration, facilities and building as well. They said currently there were some 92 private medical colleges in the country but sadly PMDC did not have any mechanism for monitoring to maintain the standards of medical education according to the criteria laid down by the supreme governing body of medical education in the country. The PMA demanded of the prime minister to take notice of PMDCs inefficiency and failure to regulate private medical institutions and medical education in Pakistan.
