Islamabad: Supreme Court (SC) while adjourning hearing of appeal plea against capital punishment in respect of death convict Shafqat Hussain till Wednesday, has sought details on “this death row prisoner is alive or has been executed.”

Expressing his surprise, the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Nasir ul Mulk remarked that SC had issued no orders for stopping execution, then why the execution of this death row prisoner has been stopped.

The CJP asked this question from Dr Tariq, counsel for death convict Shafqat Hussain. The learned counsel told 3-member bench of SC led by CJP Nasir ul Mulk that it was not even in his knowledge, who has stopped his execution and he has come to know about it through newspapers. CJP remarked “provide us information if the petitioner, death convict is alive or has been hanged.”

The counsel told that “the details about stopping his execution have not come to fore, however; Shafqat Hussain was to be executed in the morning on June 9.”

The court remarked “tell us on Wednesday, he has been executed or otherwise and after it any hearing will be carried out.”

The court adjourned the hearing of the appeal plea till today.

Execution of death row prisoner Shafqat Hussain has been postponed once again. He was to be hanged at 4.30 a.m early in the morning today in Karachi jail and Jail authorities had made all preparations for hanging him, but at the last moment orders for postponing the execution were received by Jail authorities and execution of Shafqat Hussain has been postponed for the 4th time.
