ISLAMABAD - World No.15 Aamir Atlas Khan will be top seed of the 7th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) National Squash Championship that will kick off from May 12, at Mushaf Squash Complex, Islamabad. President Punjab Squash Association (PSA) Malik Amjad Ali Noon told reporters in a press conference at a local hotel in Rawalpindi that Chief of Army Staff General Ishfaq Pervaiz Kayani would likely be the chief guest in the closing ceremony on May 15. "The main draw of the local championship will consist of 16 players, as the four will get berth by showing acceptable results in the qualifying round," he added. He further said that the pre-qualifying round would be played on Saturday (today) at the same venue. "The qualifying round will be held on May 10 and each 16 players will be competing in the pre-qualifying and qualifying rounds. However, women's competitions will be commenced May 12," he maintained. While replying a question, he said that Rs.400,000 would be disbursed among the male players while Rs.100 thousands among the girls. "Karamat Ullah Choudhary will perform the duties of tournament director while Fahim Gul will be act as tournament referee. Aamir Atlas Khan was the winner of 6th COAS International Squash Championship 2008, which was held at same venue," he described. Malik Amjad said that unfortunately foreign players were not willing to visit Pakistan after Lahore incident in which terrorist targeted the Sri Lankan cricket team on March 3. "We are trying to rebuild our image in the field of sports by organising such type of events and our this act will give a massage to other nation that sports are alive in Pakistan and the people love sports," he viewed. Head of the PSA further said that originally this event was scheduled to be held in the first week of April and some high ranked international players had sent their entries for the competition. "But after the Lahore incident they pulled out of the tournament. We are holding this event for the promotion of the game in the country and it will also provide opportunities to our young players to play with the top national players to improve their game skills," he observed. "Besides top seed Aamir Atlas Khan (WAPDA), Farhan Zaman (Navy), Aaqib Hanif (Punjab), Yasir Butt (WAPDA), Amjad Khan (NWFP), Owais Khan (Pakistan Air Force), Waqar Mehboob (NWFP), Shoaib Hassan (Punjab), Mansoor Zaman (PAF), Kashif Khan (Sindh), Safeerullah Khan (PAF) and Farhan Mehboob (WAPDA) are in the main draw," he concluded. In the end, President and Chief Executive Askari Bank Limited M K Mehkari handed over a cheque of Rs.300,000 to president PSA Malik Amjad Ali Noon. Mehkari said on this eve that Askari Bank would continue its support for the promotion of squash in the country. "We are also sponsoring to hockey, polo and tennis in organising national and international events, "he added.
