LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that provision of modern, comfortable and affordable transport facilities to the people and removal of garbage from the cities is the top priority of the government. He said that for this purpose, concrete measures are being taken for the realistic utilisation of resources as well as improvement of the performance of various departments. He said that negotiations are being held with various foreign companies regarding solid waste management for providing better environment to the people which also include power generation from solid waste collected from the cities. He was talking before the departure of a delegation from Punjab to Turkey for benefiting from its cooperation and expertise in solid waste management and transport sectors, here on Saturday. Member Provincial Assembly, Maher Ishtiaq, Commissioner Lahore Division, Secretary Transport, Secretary Commerce and Project Director Urban Unit were also present on this occasion. The CM said that people are facing problems due to unsatisfactory conditions of cleanliness in cities. He said that heaps of garbage can also be seen everywhere in the provincial metropolis despite the use of costly machinery and heavy expenditure on salaries of the officials of Solid Waste Management Department. He said that poor performance of the department and lack of interest of the officials in their duties are the main causes of this problem. He said that wastage of public resources will not be allowed and Solid Waste Management Department will have to improve its performance at every cost which is only possible when all officials of the department will discharge their duties with dedication and commitment. He said that performance of the department can not improve without evolving an effective monitoring system and for this purpose young officers imbued with the spirit of public service should come forward. He said that these young officers should be encouraged. He said that the present government is determined to provide comfortable transport facilities to the people and instructions have already been given to the Lahore Transport Company in this regard. He said that Pakistan is a poor country which cannot afford wastage of resources. He said that the government is custodian of each and every penny of public money and its transparent utilization is being ensured. He emphasized upon the members of the delegation to fully review the expertise of Turkey in solid waste management and transport sector and sign agreements for the uplift of these sectors in Punjab. He said that during their visit to Turkey they should focus on joint ventures between Punjab and Turkey so that speedy measures could be taken for the promotion of public-private partnership for the development of various sectors. He said that delegation should closely observe traffic management system in Turkey and construction of a dedicated bus lane from Mall Road to Lahore Airport on the pattern of Turkey should also be considered. The members of the delegation assured that they will come up to the expectations of people and play their role in seeking cooperation of Turkey for development of various sectors.
