KARACHI (APP) - Pakistan is playing frontline role in war against terror and so far it costs us at least $40 billion. Instead of seeking aid, the Government wants to increase trade especially with developed countries to make up our loss and strengthen the countrys economy. But we would be fighting terrorism till last, said Federal Minister for Commerce Makhdoom Amin Fahim while speaking at a dinner meeting hosted for him by Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Friday. He informed the members of KCCI that the Governments negotiations with European Union and United States were progressing in positive direction. This would help boost trade and investment in our country. Makhdoom was accompanied by Sindh Minister Haji Muzzafar Ali Shujjrah and Federal Secretary Commerce Zaffar Mahmood. The dignitaries were welcomed by President KCCI Abdul Majid Haji Muhammad, Chairman, Businessmen Group at KCCI Siraj Kassam Teli, Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister on Investment and former president KCCI M. Zubair Motiwala, Special Assistant to Sindh Chief Minister Abdul Razzak Agar, former presidents KCCI Anjum Nisar, Haroon Farooki, A.Q.Khalil, Senior Vice President KCCI Rasheeduddin Rashid and Vice President M Jawed Vohra. Makhdoom emphasized more diversification to new products and markets, and more value-addition to increase the countrys share in the world trade. He said PPP led Govt was giving great importance to private sector by extending all out support and facilitation. It was seriously pursuing the concept of public-private partnership for strong national economy and development of the country. The Government would ensure due consultation with all stakeholders / chambers and trade organizations in its policies and decision making to promote sense of ownership among them and to make these the policies practical and target oriented. I assure that your chamber will have representation in all trade delegations of the Govt, he said. He said the Government was very much alive of the business communitys problems including the high cost of doing business and was trying its best for their resolution. We are going to take immediate steps to bring the cost of doing business down, he added. To a query from KCCI leadership, the Minister said the Government has active mechanism to evaluate the performance of Commercial Attachees at Pakistans missions. Conferences are held to evaluate their performance and that KCCI should participate in these sessions. He said his Ministry has been trying to implement all rules and regulations regarding trade. It would be more proper that the Government should advance as per private sectors demand and wishes. Thus, we would welcome suggestions from private sector bodies for better economic policies and plans, he said. Federal Secretary of Commerce is here to note you suggestions and we would discus these in Islamabad for their best use, he asserted. The Federal Commerce Minister urged the business community to take care of rights /privileges of their workers as it is also duty of the Govt to protect workers rights. In response to reservations shown by KCCI leaders on Pak-Afghan Transit Trade, he said he had meeting with Afghan Commerce Minister and deliberated upon various issues with the objective to make this trade agreement in favour of both the countries.
