Multan-The recent rains have rung alarm bell for urban and rural of Punjab as the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued flood warning to 11 cities of the province including Multan.

Sources said that the provincial government has issued a directive to the DCOs of the said 11 cities to adopt all precautionary measures to avoid human and property losses in case of flooding.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has sent alert to the DCOs of Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Sargodha, Jhang, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Muzaffargarh, Layyah, Khanewal, Multan, Lodhran, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan. The districts located across river Chenab at Khanki and Qadirabad are under high alert. The river Chenab at Khanki is likely to attain high flood level ranging between 380, 000 to 410,000 cusecs on August 8, night.

River Chenab at Qadirabad is also likely to attain high flood to very high flood between 380,000 to 410,000 cusecs on August 9, night. The City District government Multan has issued red-alert and held an urgent meeting of all the departments today, finalized preventive measures, and decided setting up of flood relief camps at selected places and evacuation of people living in river belt areas.

DCO Nadir Chattha has asked police helping in evacuation of people and livestock because people were reluctant in leaving their respective places in river-bed. He ordered public announcements through mosques on flood alert.

The DCO said flash flood-carrying 380,000 cusecs of water will arrive in Multan in the next three days, however, there is no immediate threat for Multan from the flood. He said all kinds of food items will frequently be available at flood relief camps. He said flood protection dykes have been inspected and boats, life jackets and live saving drugs have been provided at flood relief camps.

Meanwhile, the Multan DCO visited the city soon after rainfall and ordered the Wasa for disposal of rainwater in minimum time. He ordered function of all disposal stations and disposal of rainwater from low-lying areas on urgent basis.
