The government of Punjab has decided to ban 2-stroke rickshaws in all the major cities of the province. It is a commendable step to control pollution. However instead of depriving thousands of poor rickshaw-owners of their livelihood and junking investment of billions of rupees, the best solution is to replace their 2-stroke engines with 4-stroke ones. The modified rickshaws could be fitted with LPG/CNG kits to further reduce pollution. Punjab government should finance the conversion expenses and recover it in easy installments. -QASIM IQBAL KHAN, Lahore, via e-mail, January 25.
