LAHORE - Former chief minister and president PML-Q Punjab Ch Parvaiz Elahi has said that local bodies convention would be organised at Nasir Bagh on March 7, which would be largely participated by the elected representatives. He was addressing a press conference after holding meeting with district, town/tehsil nazims and naib nazims at his residence on Monday. Representatives from 28 districts participated in the meeting with the exception of City Nazim Lahore Mian Amer Mahmood. The meeting was organized to formulate a strategy to face the onslaught of the Punjab government against local bodies. The participants condemned the Punjab government for leveling corruption charges against nazims, which according to them was part of the strategy to defame local bodies system. Ch Pervaiz Elahi said that the PML-Q would not allow the Punjab government to bulldoze local bodies and would help the elected representatives at every level. He said that nazims would not bow before the Punjab government and would face its illegal acts. He thanked Punjab Governor Salman Taseer for giving a helping hand to the nazims. He said the nazims would also meet President Asif Zardari if needed. He said a unanimous resolution was passed in the meeting against the Punjab government for blackmailing the representatives on the name of audit and inspection and stoppage of development funds. The resolution also demanded the government to immediately restore the development funds. He said the govt launched campaign against local bodies representatives for their refusal to facilitate development schemes of MPAs and MNAs. He said that no one was against the audit but it should be carried out according to the rules and set procedure. He condemned the PML-N leadership, without indicating name, saying that it always tried to bulldoze institutions. He said that the PML-N leadership in the past attacked Supreme Court and forced Jehangir Karamat to resign from the post of Army Chief. He said that the PML-N was now trying to destabilize the local bodies system. Ch Pervaiz Elahi said the Punjab government has failed in managing the provincial matters, adding, there was no free medicine in hospitals as it was during the tenure of PML-Q. He said no new policy was introduced in province and unemployment was increasing. He alleged that due to personal liking and disliking, the Punjab govt was lodging cases against officials. He said the chief secretary had no authority to visit the constituencies with a group of secretaries. To a question, he said that he has no difference with the PML-Q President Ch Shujaat Hussain over any possible coalition with the PML-N.
