Inflation is on an upward swing in Pakistan despite worldwide deflation and recession. Law and order is at its lowest. The 'true democracy' is not taking root because, as Mr. Khar recently observed, 50%of our professional politicians are agency men. This situation is a result of the emergence of non-professional and non-technocratic leadership throughout the country. Another reason is that soon after the founder's death, the country got into the clutches of the military which was a global strategic partner of the west. The terms of this partnership was arms in return of afflicting our poor people with hunger. It was a partnership against Jinnah's ideals of creating an economically powerful Islamic state. The present carnage in Swat and Waziristan and the killing of hundreds of thousands of our people in the 1980s war in Afghanistan is a direct result of this strategic partnership between our rulers and the colonial powers. None of the leading political parties want us weaned off the slavery of these outside masters either. It is, thus, high time to look elsewhere, to those having a clean record with no western, Russian, Indian or Israeli connections, no link with past rulers and, of course, none with army men. -M.
