LAHORE Ahmed Raza Tahir, who had served as Capital City Police Officer Lahore only for one day in May last year, has again assumed the charge of his new office as City Police Chief on Monday (May 9) in accordance with government notification. So far, the premature postings and transfers in the police hierarchy have proved just 'musical chair game rather than improving the functioning of the department or law and order situation, otherwise worsening day by day. Last year, the former Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif put the provincial government in hot water by taking suo motu notice against the appointment of Ahmad Raza Tahir as CCPO Lahore. The court had observed that since an LHC judge, Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman, in his judicial inquiry into the tragic incident at Gojra, had recommended strict action against him (Tahir) for his failure in controlling the Muslim-Christian riots while posted as the Regional Police Officer Faisalabad. Ultimately, the government had to cancel the notification and Aslam Tarin was posted on this position. Punjab government sources revealed that the Chief Minister had decided not to appoint Tahir as CCPO Lahore until and unless he would be cleared in the inquiry. Soon after, he was cleared in the inquiry, the government appointed him as Regional Police Officer Gujranwala and then again transferred and posted him as CCPO Lahore, materializing his dream, to lead the Lahore police, he was vying for. Ahmed Raza Tahir, widely known as seasoned Field Officer among police circles, has been given the task to lead Lahore police as new CCPO. Since his induction as ASP, he spent most of his time in supervising the field operations. Tahir, an officer from PSP cadre, enjoys good reputation as vigilant and professional officer and he should not be apprehended for a single mistake, a senior official in the Punjab government commented. Sources believe that though Tahir has vast experience in fighting crime and terrorism yet some top leaders in the PML-N played an important role to convince the CM for his posting as CCPO Lahore. You will see his work. He has strong nerves and takes bold steps, an official in the CM Secretariat said while referring to Tahirs appointment. Sources in the Punjab government revealed that the CM has decided to concentrate on the police administration in order to improve the otherwise bad governance in the law enforcing agency. Many officials in his secretariat say that the CM wanted to make a competent team comprising seasoned police officers to end the menace of Thana culture. Last week, the CM paid surprise visits to Kot Lakhpat and Gulberg police stations and expressed dissatisfaction over the police performance. The CM also found two youngsters in illegal police custody in the Gulberg police station during surprise visit. Finally, Shahbaz reshuffled the top police officers in Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Sahiwal, Sheikhupura, and Dera Ghazi Khan.
