ROME (Agencies) - Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who won the Italian Open 12 months ago as an unseeded player, failed to survive the first round on Monday as she stumbled to a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 defeat by Russian Ekaterina Makarova. Sanchez, who was again unseeded, recovered from a first set whitewash to take the second set on her favourite clay surface but her respite was short-lived as she was again blown away by Makarova in the breezy conditions. In further upsets, 11th seed and former French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova fell 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 to unseeded Hungarian Greta Arn, while former finalist Patty Schnyder went down to Spanish qualifier Ana Medina Garrigues 6-3, 6-2. Another Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino came through against Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-1, 0-6, 7-6 to set up a second round match against fourth seed Li Na.
