The good news is that our media is free. The bad news is that this freedom is being stretched to unmanageable limits. Freedom of media is an integral component of democracy but the brutalisation of the right to free speech and free expression in Pakistan today appears to have crossed all boundaries of decency and responsibility. All the dubious characters involved in destabilizing democratic governments of the past are back today on our TV channels, fanning flames of hatred and discord. I think these people, and those who received millions at their hands from ISI in the past to subvert will of the people, should tender an unconditional apology to the nation. The more they defend their robberies, the more they fall in the eyes of the people. -B.A. MALIK, Islamabad, via e-mail, August 30.
