THE incident in a village near Multan involving a landlord who left a fisherman at the mercy of fierce dogs reflects the callousness inherent in the feudal structure of our society. This is also a sad reflection on the state of democracy that fails to tide over these vicious class divisions. The victim was thrown before the dogs when he refused selling fish free of cost to the landlord. Though he has survived, he is said to be in a critical condition. Reportedly, the police arrested the culprit, which is a step in the right direction. Given the criminal justice system and rampant corruption, it is commonplace for influential people to go scot-free even though they have committed criminal acts of grave proportions. The police high-ups have also to ensure that the criminal gets the punishment he deserves.
