rawalpindi - A bomb hoax call made by unknown person created panic at Rawalpindi Railway Station, informed sources here on Monday.

Heavy contingent of railway police headed by SP Asmat Ullah Khan Junejo, besides other law enforcement agencies (LEAs) including bomb disposal squad, rushed towards the station, checked it thoroughly and later cleared it for public.

According to sources, a person purporting to be a journalist phoned at Railway Inquiry at 11:30am from his cell number 0321-5363649 and told female operator Nazia Begum that three persons have entered the railway station carrying explosives in their hands. The female operator immediately passed the information to railway police. The police along with bomb disposal squad came into action and reached the station. After thorough checking, they declared the station clear, sources added.

When contacted, SP Junejo confirmed that it was a hoax call.

Meanwhile, police arrested a man from Tharjiyal village of Mandra and recovered explosive material from his house, informed police spokesman Imran Haider here on Monday.

The recovered explosive material included 5-kg gunpowder, one detonator and 11 feet long wire, he added. The accused was identified as Muhammad Shabbir son of Muhammad Sarwar.

Station House Officer of Police Station Mandra, Khizar Hayyat confirmed the arrest.

He said that the accused was a proclaimed offender and was wanted to police in some 23 cases of dacoities, fraud and house robberies.
