LAHORE - The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) says the legislation on contempt of court is aimed at protecting the corruption of rulers.

“The new law intends to cover up defiance of the prime minister to the court order for writing letter to the Swiss government,” PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal said.

On June 26, the Supreme Court disqualified Yousuf Raza Gilani as PM for defying the court orders to write to Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Zardari.

Apparently, same situation confronts Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, who has to reply to the court on July 12.

However, the ruling coalition has amended the contempt of court law to clip judiciary’s powers to initiate action against any public functionary and public office holder.

The PML-N leader again advised writing the letter which would mean an automatic end to the confrontation with judiciary and safety of another prime minister from becoming a scapegoat for the sake of president.

“If President Zardari is innocent, then what worries the government?” he said calling the new legislation another ploy of the PPP.

However, he said this trick will fail as the people understand the motives behind such laws.
