AHMEDPUR EAST - On the directive of President Asif Zardari, the Federal Investigative Agency (FIA) has started a probe into the lynching incident of Chanigoth, in which a mob had beaten an unknown alleged blasphemer to death and set his body on fire for the desecration of holy Quran.

According to details, a lynch mob, consisted of over thousand people had stormed into the Chanigoth Police Station on the evening of July 3, took a blasphemer out of the lock-up and dragged him to Chanigoth Chowk.

Before leaving, the mob also set the police station and four police vehicles on fire while a shootout also occurred between police and the unruly people.

The Ahmedpur East DSP and three other police officials had sustained minor injuries while five protestors were also wounded during the baton charge.

The FIA Multan Station In-charge visited the Chanigoth Police Station and recorded the statements of the injured police officials. He also got information from the local police authorities and discussed different aspects of this terrible incident.

On the other hand, Bahawalpur DPO Ahmed Ishaq Jehangir has constituted a high level investigation team headed by SP (Investigations) Chaudhry Azhar Gujjar and consists of three DSPs and seven Inspectors.

He has ordered to probe the incident on merit and asked the SP (Investigations) to carry out the inquiry without any discrimination and pressure or fear.

Meanwhile, the Chanigoth Police have picked up 18 people for investigations.

As the result of the crackdown, all shops and business centres remained closed for seventh consecutive day while a large number of citizens have shifted to other places to avoid arrest.

Meanwhile, a report says that JUI-S Punjab Ameer Maulana Mufti Habibur Rehman Darkhawasti and the party’s leaders have said that alleged blasphemer was not mentally retarded several passports and Nato countries visas were recovered from his possession.

The JUI-S leaders have demanded the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo notice of this incident.
