Ministry of Water and Power on Wednesday achieved record electricity generation in many years after production crossed 15,750 MW.

According to Ministry of Water and Power officials the power generation from hydel reached 5978 MW, while generation from Gencos stood at 2000 MW.

According to official documents the total capacity of 13 hydel stations is around 6444 MW which is 35.88pc of total installed generation capacity of Wapda.

According to officials the average shortfall was around 3500 MW yesterday and today’s shortfall is expected to be less as it has to be calculated at midnight.

It is peak summer, but the duration of load shedding in urban areas are around 6 hours while in rural areas the duration is almost 8 hours. The officials however said that in areas where losses and theft is more the duration varies.

Last year in mid June, according to National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), the total power generation and demand was 14,000MW and 17,400MW, respectively that forced the Discos to carry out 6 to 10 hours loadshedding. “The generation includes 5,240MW, 2,070MW and 6,690MW received by the national grid through hydel, thermal and IPPs (Independent Power Producers), respectively,” the report added.
