KARACHI (Agencies) - Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has ordered release of inmates involved in minor cases and languishing in Central Jail Karachi. The CJ visited the Central Jail to listen to prisoners complaints and at the same time, a number of relatives of inmates staged a protest outside the prison and urged the CJP to issue orders for their relatives' release. Rizwan and Jamsheds family members were among the protesters. It may recalled that Rizwan, an accused in Sheraton suicide attack case, was acquitted a few day ago by the high court, but he was not released. The Chief Justice was given a briefing about the facilities being provided to the prisoners. On this occasion, he ordered release of inmates involved in minor crimes. On the directives of the CJ, various prisoners have been released so far. The CJP was not satisfied with the medical facilities being provided to prisoners. Taking notice of substandard meal prepared for inmates, the CJP directed cancellation of the contract of canteen in the jail. Justice Iftikhar also directed the administration to raise salaries of jail police equal to the Punjab police.
