PESHAWAR -

Amid tight security arrangements, around 13.92 million registered voters in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata will exercise their right to vote for 47 National Assembly (NA) and 99 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly seats in the general election for which polling will be held today (Saturday).

In KPK, there are a total of 1.21 million registered voters - 7 million male and 5.176 million female. Similarly, 1.74 million registered voters are in Fata, including 1.14 male and 0.59 female.

As per polling scheme, 9,306 presiding officers, 50,368 assistant presiding officers and 25,184 polling officers in KPK and 1,208 presiding officers, 3,323 assistant presiding officers and 3,323 polling officers in Fata will perform duties on polling day.

A total of 1,955 candidates will try their luck for 35 national and 99 provincial assembly seats in KPK. Similarly, some 9,306 polling stations and 25,184 polling booths in KPK and 1,208 polling stations and 3,323 polling booths in Fata have already been established in schools and other government offices.

In KPK, prominent politicians are in the run who included Pakistan Tahrik-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan, Chief of ANP Asfandyar Wali Khan, Chief of Quami Watan Party Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao,  Central Ameer of JUI-F Maulana Fazlur Rehman, ANP senior leader Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, ex-speaker Karim Kundi, former chief ministers Akram Khan Durrani, Pir Sabir Shah, Mehtab Khan Abbasi and Ameer Haider Khan Hoti are contesting elections from KPK.

Around 356 candidates are in the field against 12 NA constituencies in seven agencies and six Frontier Regions (FRs).

Bajaur Agency has two seats, Mohmand one, Khyber two, Orakzai one, Kurram two, North Waziristan one and South Waziristan two. The frontier regions of Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank and Lakki Marwat form a single constituency NA-47.

Interestingly, for the first time in Fata, Badam Zari has made history as a woman contesting elections here against 25 male candidates from Bajaur Agency.

Moreover, a total of 162,467 displaced persons from the Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai and South Waziristan agencies have been registered to vote in Tank, DI Khan, Hangu and Peshawar.

In KPK, provincial government has conferred one time powers of Magistrate First Class upon Deputy Commissioners (DCs), Additional Deputy Commissioners (ADCs), Assistant Commissioners (ACs) and Additional Assistant Commissioners (AACs) throughout the province specifically for 10th, 11th and 12th May 2013, for the purpose of controlling / maintenance of law and order situations in their respective areas of jurisdiction during the General Elections-2013 commencing today (Saturday).

To main law and order on election day (today) more than 96,000 law enforcement agencies personnel, including 22,000 army soldiers, have been deployed across KPK and FATA to ensure peaceful elections.

This deployment has been made keeping in view the law and order situation in the area. Some 52,000 police personnel and other law enforcement agencies personnel will also be on guard duties to provide security during the polling process.

In KPK and Fata, some 1,000 aspirants are contesting as independent. However, PTI is on top fielding 144 candidates for 47 NA and 99 KPK seats followed by PML-N 138, JUI-F 133, JI 127, PPP 120, ANP 112 and QWP 68 respectively.

The provincial government has banned entry of Afghan refuges to cities on election day, those who violated would be dealt accordingly.
