ISLAMABAD The Senate Standing Committee on Sports criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and national sports federations on the declining standard of sports in the country and decided to summon Ijaz Butt, chairman PCB, in the first week of December 2010. The House met Tuesday here at Parliament House with Senator Abdul Ghafar Qureshi (PML-Q) in the chair and also formed a three-man sub committee to present a report in the House till December 15 regarding the performance of the sports federations. Jehangir Badar would be the convener of the committee while Tahir Hussain Mushadi and Naeem Hussain Chatta will be its members. The committee showed its deep concern over the poor performance of cricket team in international competitions including the recently concluded three-match series against New Zealand that Pakistan lost 1-2. We should summon the top officials of the PCB and seek their reply, said Senator Haroon. Meanwhile, Senator Tahir Hussain Mushadi viewed that Qabza mafia had occupied the sports organisations in the country. The Ministry of Sports is looking powerless against them. Everyone is busy making money and no one has any interest in sports. There is need to take strict action against the inactive federations, he added. We should shortlist the national federations and the government should sponsor only those federations which are producing acceptable results in the international events. The federations are also not following the National Sports Policy, which had been approved by the federal cabinet in 2004, he lamented. Jehangir Badar said on this occasion that the national athletes should be given jobs. I will request the president and prime minister to pay their attention to this issue. The fake federations should also be removed from the PSBs list. There should be transparent system in the sports departments, he suggested. He said that PCB was also an accountable sports organisation. The officials should be summoned in the meeting very soon for looking into the dismal show of the national cricket team against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi. Younus XI performed below the mark against Black Caps in the ODI series, the Senator further added. Senator Haroon asked the chairman to order the PCB to provide the details of accounts to committee in the next meeting. They should also provide the details of construction of the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Incompetent persons should be removed for the PCB and competent people should be employed to save the game, he demanded. Senator Sardar Ali Khan, Senator Gul Naseeb Khan, Senator Naeem Husaain Chatta, Federal Minister for Sports Pir Aftab Hussain Jillani, secretary Sports Anis-ul-Hasnain Mosvi, joint secretary Roken Abdullah Gerdazi and Director General PSB Ameer Hamza Gillani took part in the proceeding. The Federal Minister for Sports told the House that around 50 per cent federations were not capable of running their affairs smoothly. Just 20 federations are active out of 40 while cricket board is not in our control, he said.
