LAHORE - Tenants of Roberts Agricultural Farms, Rahim Yar Khan, Tuesday staged a protest demonstration at Faisal Chowk to protest the alienation of land from them and demanded return of the same. The protestors including women and children were carrying placards and banners. They chanted slogans against the qabza mafia and demanded that land should be given to them as they were the rightful owners of the same. The tenants claimed coming through three generations, they had been cultivating the land over the last many decades. However, in 2005 the MPAs of the previous government forcibly ejected them from the land and took possession of the same claiming they had purchased it, they alleged. On the basis of documents, the tenants also claimed they had the right to own half of the Roberts land and half of it had to be put to auction after its inhabitation by Roberts as such they were legitimate of owners of the land. This, they claimed, was agreed between the tenants and Roberts who was awarded allegedly 179 squares of land during the British era for the purpose of inhabitation and research. The protestors alleged the qabza mafia with the officials had manipulated record to illegally dispossess them of the farm land. It may be recalled that the issue of land in question echoed during the last session of the Punjab Assembly after Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan, had charged the Chaudhrys of Gujrat of illegally taking hold of the land during their last government in the province. However, the Opposition side vehemently protested and opposed these charges which led the house to see an unruly and uproarious mess. The issue is still boiling between the two sides.
