PESHAWAR Top seed Mansoor Zaman won the National Senior Squash Championship trophy after beating Waqar Mehboob in the final here at the PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex on Sunday. Mansoor Zaman of PIA and Waqar Mehboob of ZTBL played well. With a good start, Mansoor secured 11-9 victory in the first set but failed to maintain it in the second and third games. There was great and tough battle witnessed between Mansoor Zaman and Waqar Mehboob in the second set when both tied at 4-4, 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, 10-all and Waqar took the game. On this occasion, the chief guest GM PIA Mamon Rashid, director sports PAF Control Board Group Captain Farooq Ahmad, district manager PIA Ihsanullah Khan and former world champion Qamar Zaman were also present. Mansoor came back strongly against Waqar trailing at 3-7 in the fourth set and first he tied the tally 7-7, he raced up to win the fourth set at 11-9. Waqar struggled hard to keep his rhythmic display of forceful smashes and some beautiful nicks on crucial occasions but when he reached 7-9, Mansoors two drop shorts turned the table and thus he got the game. Mansoor and Waqar gave each other tough battle in the last and decisive game. Mansoor took the lead with a perfect smashes and raced up 5-0 but Waqar staged a come back and tied the tally first at 5-5, then at 7-7. After 7-all, Mansoor reached 9-7 but again Waqar tied the tally with his two drop shorts (9-9). Mansoor also kept Waqar behind and did not give him more space to pick some of his drop shorts. Waqar also hit the tin twice. The points tally was also tied at 10-10, 11-11 and 12-all where Mansoor won the game by 14-12. Thus Mansoor won the match by 3-2 and pursed Rs 19,000 cash besides a domestic PIA ticket. Waqar got Rs 13,000 while the semi-finalists were awarded Rs 8,500. Sajid Khan and Nazir Khan (PAF) supervised the final. General Manager PIA Mamon Rashid gave away trophies and cash prizes.
