LAHORE Ninety-nine per cent people who took part in a referendum, organised by the Nawa-i-Waqt Group, have supported the construction of Kalabagh Dam. A total of 67,279 people expressed their opinion, 24,860 of them via mail, 41,905 through SMS and 510 email. The referendum was started on Aug 17 with a view to facilitating the rulers to take a final decision on undertaking the project in case there is a consensus about it. As people showed extraordinary interest, and readers also advised the same, the last date for eliciting views was extended to Eidul Fitr. Nawa-i-Waqt Editor-in-Chief Majid Nizami thanked the people who took part in the referendum. He said the record of the referendum was available with the paper and would be sent to the prime minister after Eid holidays. He said Governor Salman Taseer has already supported the project. He hoped that now the premier and the governor would try to convince the president and chief ministers about the utility of the project, hence to undertake its construction. Mr Nizami said it wouldnt make any difference if the project was named Pakistan Dam, but the President and the Prime Minister should make their place in history by laying its foundation stone. The project would save the country from destruction like the one caused by floods this year, solve the countrys food problem for a long time to come and rid the common man of price-hike.
