DUBAI (AFP) A fire swept through a Dubai perfume factory killing 11 Asian workers while they were sleeping, police announced on Wednesday. Nine Bangladeshis, an Indian and a Pakistani died when a fire broke out at around 2:00 am in a perfume factory on Tuesday, Dubai acting police chief Major General Khamis al-Mazeina told AFP. The cause of the blaze has not yet been established, he said. Police had arrested the perfume companys Emirati owner and its Indian managing director for illegally using the factorys premises to accommodate workers, thus causing their deaths, Mazeina said. The victims were probably asleep when the fire broke out, he said. The UAE has repeatedly been criticised for the poor living and working conditions of foreign labourers, most of whom are from south Asia.
