ISLAMABAD  -  Young Daniyal Ur Rehman has become the crowned champion of the Azadi Cup Tenpin Bowling Championship 2018 U-12 category to win his maiden national level title. Daniyal is the son of seasoned bowler and three-time national champion Iajz-Ur-Rehman.

The event started with a grand opening ceremony held at Leisure City Bowling Club under the supervision of Pakistan Tenpin Bowling Federation in collaboration with Bin Alam City late Friday night. A beautiful musical show and mega fashion show attended by top male and female models of federal capital were the top attraction of the ceremony in front of the pack-to-capacity arena. Besides others, MNA Junaid Akbar, MPA Shakeel, Air Marshal Ikram Butt, Javeed Bangesh, Chairman Pukhtun Action Committee, Ali Khan MPA, Raja Yawar, Nazim Alam Chairman Bin Alam City and Pakistan Tenpin Bowling Federation secretary Ijaz-Ur-Rehman also attended the event.

The bowling event kicked off with U-12 category matches with over 50 kids participating in the first round. They were reduced to 16 in the next round. It was a very close encounter between brothers Abdul Rafay Saqib and Abdul Wasay Saqib while they were closely followed by Ahmed and Ali but Daniyal was runaway leader. He never looked back and kept his nearest opponent at a quite distance. Daniyal, being coached and brought up by father Ijaz, showed that he was closely following his father’s footsteps and very soon will earn his own name in this sport.

Daniyal grabbed the top position with the score of a whopping 299 pins in two games while the contest for second and third place went right down to the wire between Rafay and Wasay. At one stage, they were level after the completion of the first round. But Rafay changed gears and kept day-light between him and Wasay and grabbed the second slot with the total of 207 pins while Wasay had to settle for third place with the 181 pins. The main round of women singles, professionals and doubles will start late Saturday night.

While talking to The Nation, Air Marsahl Ikram Butt, MNA Junaid Akbar, MPA Shakeel, Javeed Bangesh showed their appreciation for the organizers for holding such a successful event and hoped that with such activities the youth would be again attracted to playing sports instead of spending time on laptops and mobiles. Appreciating Ijaz for his services to promote tenpin bowling in the country, they also assured their full support to the PTBF.

Ijaz said the aim of conducting Azadi Cup was to celebrate the Independence Day in befitting manner by providing a platform to new bowlers. He informed that this year Pakistan will participate in three international championships including World Bowling Tour, Thailand, World Men’s Championship in Hong Kong, China and Qubica AMF in Las Vegas, USA. “We need sufficient amount of funds to make sure our bowlers take part and return with silverware. I personally request Imran Khan, who will take over as PM soon, to ensure sports flourish.”
