Forty cubic metres Biogas Plant of latest technology called Bag Type is being installed at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad and is expected to start functioning in a month.

UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Iqrar Ahmad performed the ground breaking ceremony here. The project is being carried out by Faculty of Agricultural Engineering in collaboration with Chongquing Biogas New Technology, China. Chinese Engineers Zou Xiandong and Tang Guanghua were also present on the occasion.

Dean Agriculture Engineering Dr Muhammad Iqbal briefed the VC about the progress on the project. Dr Anjum Munir, Dr Gulam Mustanfa Sindhu, Dr Ashafaq Ahmad, Dr Asif Ali, Dr Rasheed Ahmad, Dr Ehsan and other senior faculty members were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Iqrar said that the country needed to promote alternative ways of energy to overcome the energy crisis. He said that two biogas plants of bag type of 20 cubic metres would be installed at the site. He said that the researchers and engineers should come up with new ideas to overcome the energy crisis. He directed the staff to conduct valuable researches on the animals waste to find out which are the most suitable for the energy generations. He said that natural gas reserves were depleting, therefore we need to exploit biogas as an alternative energy source to meet the growing demand. He lauded the Punjab government initiatives to convert 100,000 tube wells in different districts of Punjab from diesel to biogas. The UAF engineers are providing technical support to the Punjab government on the project. He said there were 35 million animals in Punjab and their daily dung amounts to an average of 690 million kg that can be used for energy.

Dean Prof Dr Iqbal said that bag type biogas plants are potable in nature and it is cost-effective. He said that the ways of alternative energy were essential to meet the demand of energy in the county. He said that the University was already running two 65 cubic metres biogas plants of another technology called floating drum type.

Dr Anjum Munir said that 40 cubic metre of energy could be got from 600 kg dung. He said that 600 kg dung cab be produced from 60 animals.  He said that the bag type plant is more efficient.
