ISLAMABAD - Back to back two explosions at an Army weapons depot occurred on Monday in Sihala, an area at the outskirts of Islamabad which left one Army man dead and three personnel critically injured. Army sources told this scribe that the incident occurred due to mishandling by the soldiers who were busy in fire-fighting exercise. In the morning at 10.30 am, four personnel of Army while jumping over the fire lost control over a grenade that fell into the fire and blew up. That caused death to one Army man. The other blast left three non-commissioned rank personnel badly injured. The body and the injured personnel were moved to Fauji Foundation Hospital managed by the Pakistan Army, the sources added. Sources said that the depot was packed with weapons including short range missiles, however, the incident took place at reasonable distance in the exercise shed that could not affect the bigger storage. When this scribe contacted Maj Gen Athar Abbas of ISPR, he confirmed the death and injuries saying that the incident took place in the Army depot while the personnel were busy in handling the weapons as a routine matter. To a question, he said inquiry into the incident has been ordered. Islamabad district administration sources told this scribe that soon after the incident Rescue 1122 and CDA ambulances were dispatched to the incident scene in Sihala. However, the Army had already taken the control of the area. An eye witness upon condition of anonymity told this scribe that SSP Islamabad Tahir Alam reached the spot after one hour. Army officials did not allow police to inspect the area where blast took place, he added Traffic advancing to sub-division Kahuta of Rawalpindi district; Poonch division of AJK that includes Rawalakot, Plandri, Baloch, Sinhsa and district Kotli of AJK remained stuck for one hour. Later on the army allowed the traffic to move.
