The District Population Welfare Department in collaboration with Population Welfare Training Institute Lahore organised a workshop titled ‘Healthy Mother and Child’ for teachers and factory workers here the other day. “In Pakistan, maternal mortality rate is 276 per million. We can cut maternal mortality rate with the help of awareness, care and hygienic diet to the expecting women,” the moot ended with the note.Speaking on the occasion, District Population Welfare Officer Dr Mujheeb Rabbani said that the announcement of international conference for population and development held in Cairo pleaded for the health of mother and child. He added that every year 0.585 million women died from pregnancy-related complications... 16,000 mothers died daily.Speaking on the occasion, Dr Nuzhat Qaisar urged the women to breastfeed their babies’ up to six months at least since breastfeeding protected them from diseases.”PWTI Instructor Shahid Mehmood said that the rapid increase in population had been affecting national resources and triggering a number of other troubles. He further disclosed 95 children, out of 10,000, died before celebrating their first birthday .He said that the government is “spending a huge amount for health specially maternity wards in basic health units, tehsil and district head quarters hospital for free deliveries of babies, but due to unawareness”.”In Punjab 22 percent deliveries are made by untrained and unqualified midwives.” He urged the peoples to get free treatments and awareness from population welfare centres to save lives.
