LAHORE - Provincial government is compelling the farmers of southern Punjab to get their share of water from Chasma-Jhelum Link Canal by force to cultivate their crops, as they are not getting their due water share. These views were expressed by PML-Q leaders Sikander Bosan, Aashique Gopang and Hussain Jehanian Gardezi in a press statement issued on Tuesday. They said southern Punjab farmers were not getting water for cultivation of cotton crop, which was a major source of countrys foreign exchange. They said 4m farmers of southern Punjab make their living through rice, cotton and wheat crops, while dependence of farmers on provincial governments regarding their water share would be foolishness. PML-Q leaders said farmers of southern Punjab not only deprived of their water share at the time of cotton cultivation but the cronies of the provincial government also black marketing the urea fertilizer and the farmers had to pay Rs 200 extra than the fixed prices. They said the provincial government had not fulfilled any of their promise with the farmers and the farmers of Punjab especially of southern Punjab were the main sufferers of the policies of coalition govt of PML-N and PPP. They demanded of the provincial minister for irrigation, Raja Riaz that he should perform his duties on most immediate basis to address the problems of the farmers of southern Punjab.
