LAHORE The Special Olympics Pakistan Punjab Program is holding National Games on May 17 to 19 here at the Lahore University of Management Science (LUMS) Lahore. According to Anisur Rehman, nearly 300 athletes from all Pakistan will take part in these Games. He said that the Special Olympics is an international movement to give the mentally handicapped a chance to have year round training and participate in world and international games. Special Olympics Pakistan is an organization devoted to the philosophy of providing sports training to the mentally handicapped in the field of athletics and sports. We have held several national sporting events and participated in the World Special Olympics in July 1991 at Minneapolis USA, with 12 athletes returning triumphant with 15 medals, and July 1995 we again participated in world games at New Heaven Connecticut USA, with 20 athletes we bagged 21 medals this time. On November 7, 1996 we participated in Special Olympics South Pacific games held in China and the results were 8 gold, 15 silver and 8 bronze again in June 1999 we participated in the World Games at North Carolina USA with 45 athletes and came back triumphant with 61 medals out of which 24 were gold, he said. In June 2003 Pakistan participated in World Games at Dublin Ireland and bagged 88 medals out of which 43 were gold. The last games Pakistan took part were the World Games 2007 at Shanghai China. We again showed our strength and bagged 88 medals, he added.
