The assassination of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto amounts to the fourth time murder of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, after one of his own and two (unresolved murders) of his two sons. The deaths of Murtaza and Shah Nawaz should also be brought under focus now because it is widely believed that the murder of Murtaza was used to topple the second government of Benazir Bhutto. At the time of judicial execution of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, General Zia had personally masterminded the tragedy and his complicity was so brazen that his role in the tragedy of April 4, 1979 was anything but a secret. Likewise, at the time of the targeted killing of Benazir Bhutto, Musharraf was generally perceived to be the main suspect. Hence Musharraf has to answer some very intriguing questions relating to his alleged involvement in the tragedy of December 27 2007. If Pakistan really comes first for him, as was constantly being parroted by the 'Commando General during his time, he should come back to Pakistan and clear his name. Otherwise, the history would convict him through the august court of public opinion. Before taking part in politics, the former Army Chief would need to prove that his hands are not soiled with blood. If some day by chance, the Supreme Court takes suo motto notice of the BB murder inquiry, Musharraf could find it extremely difficult to hide from the truth. BBs murder cannot be pushed under the carpet. Nobody, therefore, should take this inquiry lightly. The government is engaged in doing whatever possible under the circumstances to reach the truth. By shunning cooperation, Musharraf is compounding the mystery regarding his dubious role. -B. A. MALIK, Islamabad, May 10.
