KARACHI (PR) - Due to rising population and nutritional needs of Pakistan, milk is an essential item which is vital for children and public at large. The packaged milk caters to more than 15 percent of the urban and semi urban population, with at least 70% of packaged milk being consumed by low income groups. These facts were highlighted at a Press Conference held by the Pakistan Dairy Association (PDA). The press conference focused on the importance of continuing the zero-rated tax regime on milk and dairy products, which will otherwise raise inflation for low income level groups to more than 12% as other grocery items will follow the trend set by milk prices. The most important factor put across at the press conference vas that packaged milk and dairy roducts are essential food items and are vital nutritional input for common man. Hence it should be exempted from VAT.
